Karthik Mallur Brings Soulful Visuals to ‘Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj’

Mumbai: Acclaimed cinematographer Karthik Mallur, who is wielding the camera for the upcoming biographical film Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj, is steadily carving a niche for himself with his thoughtful and immersive visual approach across regional, Bollywood, and international cinema.

Mallur’s recent international success, Mercy, won the Best International Feature Film award at the 2025 London Independent Film Festival. Notably, the film released on April 24 — the same date that was originally scheduled for the theatrical release of Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj.

Hailing from Bangalore, Karthik began his journey in the film industry as an actor in 2009 before transitioning into cinematography. With credits spanning Kannada, Tulu, Tamil, and Hindi projects, he has earned recognition for his technically sound and emotionally resonant storytelling through visuals.

His passion for visuals started early. Mallur learned photography from his father and graphic design from a neighbour by the age of eight. After completing a Diploma in Electronics and Communication, he worked as a graphic designer before pursuing an MBA in Advertising and Media Management from United Business Institutes, Belgium.

The shift to cinematography happened after his debut acting project failed to release. Undeterred, Karthik produced and acted in a short film, but dissatisfaction with its technical aspects led him to self-teach editing and cinematography. This hands-on approach resulted in multiple award-winning short films, including recognition at the Red FM Awards, SMIFA Awards, and NexGn Awards. He was also nominated for Best Cinematography at the Critics’ Choice Awards in 2019.

His Bollywood entry came with the psychological horror film The Y, which enjoyed a successful 82-day theatrical run in 2023. He followed it up with the popular espionage thriller web series Mukhbir – The Story of a Spy.

Speaking about his experience on Shree Baba Neeb Karori Maharaj, Karthik described it as both a major creative and deeply spiritual journey. Director Sharad Singh Thakur reportedly onboarded him purely on instinct, without even reviewing his previous work — a gesture that deeply moved the cinematographer.

The film also presented Mallur with a new technical challenge: his first-ever three-camera setup. Having used a two-camera system on Mercy, he was initially hesitant due to concerns over lighting precision and visual consistency. However, considering the film’s massive scale, large ensemble cast, and lengthy script, he embraced the format to streamline the shooting schedule without compromising cinematic quality — ultimately saving significant costs for the producers.

Known for his collaborative approach, Karthik worked closely with various departments to establish a unified visual language. During pre-production recce, he crafted a custom color palette inspired by archival photographs and the period aesthetics of locations connected to Neem Karoli Baba, aiming for authenticity and emotional immersion.

To keep recurring locations visually engaging, he constantly varied lighting patterns, compositions, and camera angles. Maintaining lighting continuity across three simultaneous cameras was one of the production’s biggest technical hurdles.

Given the film’s spiritual and devotional tone, Mallur deliberately moved away from the clinical sharpness of modern digital sensors. He employed specialized optical filters on all cameras to soften textures and create a more organic, filmic, and reverent visual feel. He also carefully composed frames of Maharaj Ji to echo the iconic archival images familiar to devotees.

In the grading suite, he avoided standard LUTs and conventional looks, instead developing a bespoke color treatment tailored to the film’s emotional and spiritual core.

With a growing body of work that spans multiple languages, streaming hits, and international acclaim, Karthik Mallur continues to establish himself as a cinematographer who blends technical excellence with soulful, story-driven visuals.
