Meerut: In a heart-touching story of spiritual evolution, Dr. Shameem Ahmed, Director General of Translam Group of Institutions in Meerut, has redefined the true spirit of Bakrid (Eid al-Adha). What was once marked by ritual sacrifice has now become a celebration of compassion, service, and reverence for all life.
Twenty-five years ago, a simple yet profound incident in a village in Mewat changed Dr. Shameem’s life forever. While purchasing a goat for sacrifice, he witnessed the seller’s young son crying bitterly. Deeply moved, Dr. Shameem immediately returned the animal and took a solemn vow in front of everyone present — he would never sacrifice an animal on Bakrid again.
This pivotal moment became a turning point. Today, Dr. Shameem firmly believes that the real essence of any festival lies not in taking life, but in nurturing and celebrating it. “Every living being has the right to live,” he says.
A New Tradition of Seva
Instead of animal sacrifice, Dr. Shameem now channels the spirit of Bakrid into selfless service. On Eid this year, he organized a special bhandara (community feast) at Sai Dada-Dadi Old Age Home on Ganganagar Main Divider Road in Meerut. Samosas and jalebis were distributed among the elderly residents, and full meals will be served over the next two days.
For the past several years, he has also been celebrating the birthday of a dog named Alex on his college campus with great enthusiasm — a beautiful symbol of his commitment to animal welfare.
Dr. Shameem advocates that true sacrifice should be of our negative habits, ego, and harmful practices rather than innocent animals. He also strongly supports a complete ban on the slaughter of cows and camels. On Bakrid, he himself chose a simple sattvic meal of dal, roti, and rice, emphasizing the spiritual superiority of vegetarianism.
A Spiritual Message for All
Dr. Shameem Ahmed’s inspiring journey beautifully illustrates the deeper spiritual truth found across traditions — that real devotion and celebration lie in kindness, service (seva), and protecting life in all its forms.
In an era where festivals are often reduced to rituals, stories like his remind us of the higher purpose: transforming our hearts and serving the vulnerable — be it the elderly, animals, or any living soul.
Go Spiritual salutes this noble soul whose life now radiates the message: “Sacrifice your inner flaws, not innocent lives. Serve with love — that is the highest worship.”
May this story inspire many more to walk the path of compassion and conscious living.
