“Why Are We Losing Our Humanity? Nepali Woman Brutally Attacked in Bareilly

Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, August 3, 2025 – A harrowing incident of mob violence in Bareilly’s Kila Thana area has left a Nepali woman, Susmita Saru Magar, also known as Kajal, brutally beaten and humiliated after being mistaken for a thief. The shocking assault, captured in a viral video, raises a painful question: Why are we resorting to senseless violence?

Susmita, hailing from Pokhara, Nepal, had come to Bareilly from Noida in search of employment after losing her job. Staying with an acquaintance, Vinay, in the Baradari locality, she stepped onto a terrace to take a phone call around 1 a.m. on Friday night. Misjudging her as a thief, neighbors began shouting and chasing her with torches. Terrified, Susmita jumped from the terrace to escape, only to be caught by the mob below.

The crowd tied her hands and feet with ropes, beat her with sticks, and publicly humiliated her. The assault left her with two broken teeth and a leg injury. In the viral video, Susmita can be heard pleading, “I am not a thief, please call the police,” as the mob continued their attack, with some bystanders watching passively.

The Bareilly police, prompted by the video’s spread online, arrested four individuals—Gaurav Saxena, Shivam Saxena, Aman Saxena, and Arun Saini—who were sent to judicial custody. SP City Manush Parik confirmed that a case has been filed, and efforts are ongoing to identify other perpetrators. This incident follows a disturbing pattern in Bareilly, where mob attacks, often targeting suspected thieves, have become alarmingly frequent, including a recent case in Bhojipura where a man was beaten to death.

Such acts of violence reflect a deeper societal malaise—mistrust, prejudice, and a dangerous mob mentality that bypasses justice. In a culture rooted in spiritual principles of compassion and non-violence, these incidents demand reflection on why we are allowing fear and anger to fuel senseless brutality.
