The High Cost of Greed: How Misused Empowerment and Greed Are Destroying Families : By Sonu Tyagi

In today’s fast-paced world, the noble cause of women’s empowerment, meant to bring equality and justice, is sometimes twisted into a tool for personal greed, revenge, and gender supremacy. The tragic suicide of a Bengaluru software engineer, reportedly harassed by false cases and financial demands, raises uncomfortable but essential questions. It reflects a deeper crisis in our society—a crisis rooted in greed, misplaced power dynamics, and a lack of spiritual grounding.

The incident shines a harsh light on how families, once the bedrock of Indian values, are being torn apart. When love, trust, and mutual respect give way to greed and ego, families crumble. Laws meant to protect the vulnerable are misused as weapons for personal gain. In this race for supremacy—material or otherwise—it is the innocent who suffer the most. Men, in particular, find themselves cornered, unheard, and broken, often with no recourse but to take extreme steps.

Greed and Ego: The Spiritual Poison

From a spiritual perspective, greed (lobh) and ego (ahankar) are two of the greatest poisons of the human soul. Ancient wisdom across all spiritual traditions warns us of the destructive nature of these vices. When greed overtakes relationships, it reduces love to transactions and humanity to cold calculations. A family, which should be a space of harmony, becomes a battleground for material gains and dominance.

The modern interpretation of empowerment sometimes strays from its original intent. Empowerment is about lifting each other, creating harmony and equality. It is not about creating new power imbalances or unjust suffering. When empowerment is misused as a shield for exploitation, it leads to chaos, not progress. True empowerment comes from empathy, compassion, and spiritual strength—not from the destruction of others.

The Mental Health Crisis and Spiritual Void

Incidents like the Bengaluru tragedy highlight a larger mental health crisis in society. Men suffering in silence are often stigmatized when they share their pain. With little emotional support or societal acceptance, many feel isolated and hopeless. Spiritually, this reflects a disconnect from our inner selves, from values like forgiveness, selflessness, and humility.

In the absence of spiritual awareness, we fail to see others as humans with emotions and struggles. Greed blinds us, and the lust for money or power overrides compassion. This lack of spiritual balance fuels not just broken homes but also broken souls. As scriptures often remind us, “Attachment to material desires is the root cause of suffering.”

The Way Forward: Reclaiming Spiritual Values

To heal our society and prevent such tragedies, we need to reconnect with spirituality and its teachings.

  1. Restore Family Values: Families must be built on love, trust, and spiritual unity. Greed for wealth or dominance cannot be the foundation of relationships.
  2. Promote Gender Balance: Empowerment should lift society as a whole, not create new forms of oppression. True equality lies in understanding and compassion.
  3. Create Support Systems: Men, like women, need emotional and societal support when facing harassment or false allegations. There must be mechanisms to address their struggles without stigma.
  4. Spiritual Awakening: A return to spiritual teachings—be it through meditation, yoga, or mindfulness—can help individuals find peace, purpose, and harmony within themselves and with others.

As a society, we must strive for balance—between rights and responsibilities, empowerment and compassion, material success and spiritual fulfillment. The Bengaluru tragedy is not just about one man; it is a mirror reflecting where we are heading as a society. If we do not address this spiritual void, the cost will continue to be paid by broken families and lost lives.

In the words of the Bhagavad Gita: “He who is free from desires and works for the welfare of others attains peace.” It is time we reawaken this wisdom and build a world where justice, compassion, and harmony prevail.
