In a shining example of integrity and moral courage, a sanitation worker in Chennai has reminded us all that true wealth lies in honesty and dharma. Padma, a dedicated Greater Chennai Corporation employee from Muppathman Temple Street in T. Nagar, discovered a bag containing gold jewellery worth nearly Rs 45 lakh while carrying out her routine cleaning duties on January 11, 2026.
While sweeping the streets near Muthamman Koil Street in Pondy Bazaar, Padma noticed an unattended bag left on a pushcart. Curiosity led her to open it, revealing approximately 45 sovereigns (around 360 grams) of glittering gold ornaments—necklaces, earrings, bangles, and more. In that moment, where temptation could have easily taken hold, Padma chose the path of righteousness. She promptly informed her supervisors and, along with Greater Chennai Corporation officials, handed the bag over to the Pondy Bazaar Police Station the same evening.
The police verified the contents and traced the owner, Ramesh, a jewellery trader from Nanganallur, who had accidentally left the bag behind while chatting with a friend earlier that day. He had filed a complaint upon realizing the loss. After due inquiry and formalities, the precious jewellery was safely returned to him, bringing immense relief to the family.
What makes Padma’s act even more inspiring is that honesty runs deep in her household. During the COVID-19 lockdown, her husband Subramani found Rs 1.5 lakh in cash near Marina Beach and similarly returned it to the authorities. The couple, living modestly in a rented home while raising two children, have quietly embodied values of ethical living and civic responsibility.
Padma’s selfless gesture did not go unnoticed. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin personally felicitated her at the Secretariat on January 12, 2026, draping a shawl over her shoulders and presenting a cheque for Rs 1 lakh as a token of appreciation. Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation and police praised her as a role model, highlighting how such acts strengthen societal trust and demonstrate that true character shines brightest in humble circumstances.
